After years of working closely with design teams across Apple I got the opportunity to work as a Design Prototyper. At the time this was a new type of role that brought engineering directly into the design process to test out ideas and create demos for executive reviews. I discovered that an internal engineering testing tool could be repurposed to build prototypes 10 times faster and gave me the freedom to contribute my own ideas to the designs and soon I was contributing to most of the projects across the Media Apps Design team. By the end of my time at Apple I was leading the design efforts on critical areas of high profile projects and giving demos of the team's work to senior executives.

I was an early member of the design team tasked with reinventing the interface to our TVs. Combining the touchpad of the new Siri remote with UIKit based apps and new content service models, we spent years exploring new interface paradigms and how to interact with a device that has fundamental differences from either phones or desktop computers. In addition to building all of the interactive demos that encapsulated the current state of the designs that were regularly presented to top executives, I was the lead designer for the remote interactions and the Now Playing experience. I prototyped many different models for how to select items with the touch surface, created a novel way to navigate through content using a visual scrubber that is now ubiquitous in video apps, explored gestural methods of text entry, and created numerous concepts for how to interact with video content in new ways.

Siri Remote Prototyping
The process of importing media using the OS provided controls was inefficient and had a very small preview of the content. I designed a new import screen with large previews that is a quick swipe away from the camera. To make it easier to quickly post multiple times, I also added a way to select additional items and edit the posts without having to start the posting flow from the beginning for each post.

iTunes 11
As the team embarked on an extensive redesign of the entire interface for iTunes 11 I built fully interactive prototypes to help refine the design concepts and to overcome executive reticence to some of the more controversial changes. I also created the concept and prototyped adding the Up Next queue to iTunes.

A headlining feature of iTunes 11 was a new album view that opened inline to display the contents of the album. The design goal was to have the view of the album contents feel like the liner notes of a record. To achieve this I created an algorithm that analyzed the colors of the album artwork to find a desirable background color and text colors that would contrast appropriately with the background. The resulting algorithm was tested on thousands of image to find edge cases and make minor tweaks that would maintain the artistic integrity of the album colors.

For iOS 6 the App Store and iTunes Store were fully redesigned. To support these efforts I built an extensive prototype for each that demonstrated all of the relevant changes to the interface including several new interaction models and complicated animations. These prototypes were used to validate and improve the designs and to demonstrate the project to the top executives across the company.

For the launch of News+ to highlight premium magazine content in the news feed I designed and prototyped several ways to help the magazines have a more premium feel and stand out from the rest of the feed. In addition to supporting video covers we wanted the covers and surrounding color matched interface to come alive with the motion of device through parallax layered covers, specular shines and radiant shadows.
